A Family Affair
As hazelnuts roast in the oven, three generations of women prepare the ingredients for the night's dinner. The men discuss business, while the children watch television, all waiting impatiently to enjoy great-grandmother's signature dish. Sound like a holiday gathering? Hardly. This generational gathering is an everyday event in this kitchen space, the heart of a home that houses four family generations, ranging in age from 8 to 89 years old.
It's a difficult task for a designer to create a dream kitchen for one cook. Designing for three is quite another challenge. Nonetheless, Kuche + Cucina dutifully tackled the task. The homeowners also hired interior decorator Joye Wesler, who worked closely with kitchen designer Gina M. Ko to create this dream kitchen for the family.
The area demanded maximum efficiency and ultimate comfort. Careful consideration was given to the physical limitations of the great-grandmother. Designers eliminated or softened hard corners without sacrificing design, and the round island solved the major issues. Curved cabinets help the second cook work more efficiently and create additional visibility necessary for keeping an eye out for elders and children. A cozy eating area promotes interaction among the family members.
