Determining what other local professionals to contact depends on the size and scope of your project. Do not hesitate to contact a professional if you are not sure what the project entails or if you are unsure if you can handle the job yourself.

As you contact these professionals, be sure to check references - Check with the Better Business Bureau and with the state and local building authorities to make sure that the person you are dealing with has all the necessary building permits and represents a reputable, legitimate company.

Below is a list of terms to help you understand the different types of design professionals:

  • Kitchen Planner - Specializes in designing and creating functional floor plans. A Kitchen Planner is able to give minor assistance or can completely design an entire kitchen.
  • CKD (Certified Kitchen Designer) - Designs and supervises the installation of residential kitchens.
  • Architect/Designer - Typically, architects and designers are contracted for more extensive help, especially if major structural changes need to be made.
  • Remodeler/General Contractor - Schedules and supervises all projects; general contractors hire, supervise, and pay subcontractors.
