Option # 1 is virtually a replacement
job of the original kitchen. The old cabinets have been replaced with
new ones, as well as the appliances and the counters. The layout was
unchanged.
Option # 2 represent a simple and basic redesigning of the
space. Without changing the room layout, we have added cabinet storage
with taller wall cabinets and additional cabinets in adding the
island. We improved the function by adding counter space and a second
sink in the island. And we enhanced the over all looks of the kitchen
by finishing the wall cabinets with crown moldings and an overboard
above the sink.
The appliances were covered with décor panels, to create a more
uniform and "finished" look. Lastly, pilasters were placed in the
island and by the sink to "tie" the two areas together and "break" the
square look of the room.
(The appliances in option #2 have also been upgraded, a better stove,
a real hood, a built-in refrigerator and a prep sink. The cost of this
package will be higher, but because of the number of models and
options we left out the two appliance packages in these design cost
analysis.)
Now, after improving the same basic layout, let's analyze the cost
difference of the two layouts using our Semi-Custom grade cabinet
line, in shaker door style, maple wood, "overlay" door construction,
typical accessories, an average granite counters, tax and installation
of the cabinets.

Because the design in option #2 embraces extra cabinets, more work
space, a lot more panels, moldings, etc. and more installation time,
its total cost is approximately 50% higher. If this were your project,
which design would you choose? Let's analyze the benefits. Option # 1
gives you a new kitchen, good quality cabinetry and improved interior
with new accessories for a moderate sum. Option # 2 gives you the same
plus additional storage, improved work space and a much more dramatic
look for an extra $6,500. Both are from the same reputable supplier.
Which design approach best suits your needs? Naturally, your choice
will differ from the next family's. Everyone's needs, values and
budget ranges will vary.
The main point is that when you are considering an investment in your
home, it's important to explore all alternatives. That way you will
always make the best decision for your family over the long term. This
approach of weighing the pros and cons of one design concept versus
the next has been our company philosophy since our inception.
It makes no difference to our designers wether your kitchen investment
is $15,000, $30,000, $60,000 or more. Our job is to listen to your
needs, generate ideas to solve problems, and help you weigh the pros
and cons of each major decision. We do that with every project.
And we are very good at it!
